The 12 houses (bhavas) in Vedic astrology
Your kundli is divided into 12 houses (bhavas), each covering an area of life. The sign on a house, its lord, the planets inside it and the planets aspecting it together describe how that area tends to unfold.
What each house means

|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu | Self, body, temperament, vitality |
| 2nd | Dhana | Savings, family, speech, food |
| 3rd | Sahaja | Courage, siblings, communication, short travel |
| 4th | Sukha | Home, mother, property, vehicles, inner peace |
| 5th | Putra | Intelligence, children, creativity, romance |
| 6th | Ari | Work routine, health habits, competition, debts |
| 7th | Yuvati | Marriage, spouse, partnerships, contracts |
| 8th | Randhra | Change, research, longevity, joint resources |
| 9th | Dharma | Fortune, father, teachers, faith, long journeys |
| 10th | Karma | Career, status, achievements |

| 12th | Vyaya | Expenses, rest, foreign lands, spirituality |
Kendra, trikona and dusthana
- Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10): the pillars of the chart. Planets here act strongly and visibly.
- Trikonas (1, 5, 9): houses of fortune and merit. Their lords are considered supportive for every lagna.
- Dusthanas (6, 8, 12): houses of effort. They are not “bad”: they cover healing, research and service, and malefic planets often do well in the 6th.
- Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11): houses that improve with time and effort.
How to read one house
Start with the house lord: where it sits shows where the matters of that house are directed. Then check the lord’s strength (exalted, own sign or debilitated), the planets in the house, and which planets aspect it. Ashtakavarga bindus give a quick numerical sense of strength, with 28 as the average.
