Manglik dosha: what it really means
Few astrology terms cause as much worry as “Manglik”. Here is what it actually is, how it is checked, and why classical texts themselves list many ways it is cancelled.
What is Manglik dosha?
A chart is called Manglik (or Kuja dosha) when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Mars is energy, drive and assertiveness; in these houses it is said to bring intensity to home and partnership.
It is commonly checked from three points: the lagna, the Moon and Venus. Mars in those houses counted from the lagna is usually given the most weight; from the Moon or Venus alone it is considered mild.
How common is it?
Very common. Six of the twelve houses count, and the check is done from three points, so a large share of all people show Manglik from at least one of them. That alone tells you it cannot be a rare curse.
Classical cancellations
- Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara).
- Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars.
- Mars in Karka or Simha for certain houses.
- Both partners being Manglik: traditionally the two balance each other.
- Many texts add further exceptions based on the sign and house combination.
A calm way to use it
Treat Manglik as one input. Compare both charts, look at the 7th house and its lord, Venus and the Navamsa, and consider the two people themselves. No remedy needs to be bought, and no marriage should be refused on this factor alone.
